Three in a Row!

BRISTOL, R.I. – The top-seeded Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team held off Endicott College Saturday afternoon to win their third straight Commonwealth Coastal Conference Championship by a 3-1 score (26-28, 25-23, 25-17, 25-23).

RWU has now defeated Endicott in three straight CCC Championship matches with the win. They extend their winning streak to 19 straight games, the second longest winning streak in the New England region behind Southern Vermont who has won 22 straight.

With the win, seniors Marilu Gonzalez-Yanez (Los Angeles, Calif.), Natasha Sopchak (Rhinebeck, N.Y.), and CCC Player of the Year Marybeth Torpey (Quincy, Mass.) all received their 100th career victory for the Hawks.

Both teams traded points back and forth in the first set , with ten ties and three lead changes in the game. The Hawks broke point game three times before a kill by Callie Dolan and a Hawk attack error gave the Gulls the first set 28-26.

Roger Williams trailed early in the second set, going down 3-10. After a Hawk timeout, RWU began to play much better over the remainder of the game, eventually taking a 15-14 lead. A block by Holly Hancock (Tilton, N.H.) would ultimately give the Hawks a 25-23 win.

RWU grabbed an 11-9 lead to begin the third set before Falyn Torelli (Pelham, N.Y.) made it 12-10. From that point, a 7-0 Hawk run would put the game out of reach for Endicott, as the Hawks would go on to win 25-17.

The clinching set saw Endicott take a quick 3-1 lead before the Hawks went on top 4-3. The advantage would stay no higher than three for the Hawks, as Endicott continued to make things interesting. Yet a kill by Danna McDonald (Santa Monica, Calif.) gave the Hawks a 25-23 win and the CCC title.

The Hawks were led by sophomore Krystie Luczynski (Kensington, Conn.) who had 20 kills and four digs, while junior Kelsee Loche (Millis, Mass.) added 33 digs. Torpey chipped in with 13 kills and 24 digs, while junior Emily Lebowitz (Coventry, Conn.) broke a school record with 60 assists in the match.

Endicott's Ashley Norley (Sudbury, Mass.) finished with a team-high 28 digs, while Hannah Dahlgren (Queensbury, N.Y.) led the Gulls with 12 kills. Sarah Allshouse (Berthoud, Colo.) had a double-double with 26 assists and 14 digs. Elyse Barbour (Greenville, R.I.) added ten kills and seven blocks.

Roger Williams (28-3) will find out on Monday which region the team will be shipped out to and who the opponent will be. Endicott finishes the season 15-15 overall, and 7-2 within the Commonwealth Coast Conference.
