For the second time in school history, the Roger Williams University sailing team earned the No. 1 ranking in the nation among all collegiate sailing teams, according to the national rankings compiled by Sailing World.

The Hawks nearly swept all of the first-place votes among the rankings, receiving 18 of the 19 first-place votes and tallying a total of 378 points, 42 more than second-ranked Dartmouth College. Yale University, ranked third, received the other first-place vote.

RWU comes off a weekend that saw the team finish second at the 2011 Intercollegiate Sailing Association Match Race National Championship in their first berth to that competition since 2006. The Hawks finished as the top school from the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association at the championship as well.

This week’s ranking marks the second time in school history that RWU has been the top-ranked team in the country. Roger Williams received the number-one ranking in April 2011, coming off a weekend with two runner-up finishes and wins at the Central Series Four and the New England Coed Dinghy Championship.
