With a special appearance by prominent activist and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Andrew Young highlighting a weeklong series of events, the entire Roger Williams University community will unite to celebrate Inauguration Week 2011 from October 10 to 14.
According to the Inauguration Committee members planning the events, the week of activities will commemorate not just the arrival of Donald J. Farish, the University’s 10th president, but the extraordinary accomplishments that take place on the RWU campus every day.
Ambassador Young (pictured) has led a distinguished life and career that has included posts as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, United States Congressman and Mayor of Atlanta, among others. He has not only set himself apart as an individual dedicated to human rights, but challenged those around him to rethink their own values and ideas.
The presentation by Ambassador Young will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 12, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Campus Recreation Center Field House. A reception will immediately following in the Gymnasium. Both the presentation and reception are open to all members of the campus community and the general public; no tickets are required.
The formal investiture of Dr. Farish will take place on Thursday, Oct. 13, at 2:00 p.m. in the Campus Recreation Center Field House. A reception will follow in the Gymnasium starting at 3:45 p.m.
Other highlights from Inauguration Week include a service project in partnership with the Rhode Island Community Food Bank; an academic showcase featuring the work of RWU students and faculty; discussion panels on a variety of topics; a campus-wide BBQ on Friday afternoon; and a fireworks open to both the campus community and the general public.
The current Schedule of Events on the Inauguration 2011 website offers more information; in the weeks to come, additional details will be shared as plans for other events are finalized. Members of the campus community are encouraged to share their thoughts on what Inauguration 2011 means for Roger Williams University via an online Guestbook available here.
