Understanding China: The Reality Behind Its Fast Economic Growth

The Spiegel Center for Global & International Programs and the East Asian Studies Program present the 2013 Fall Semester Program Series on East Asia — Understanding China: The Reality behind Its Fast Economic Growth, a discussion by Dr. Boshu Zhang, Professor of East Asian Studies, Columbia University. A reception will follow.
Widely respected Chinese author and philosopher, Dr. Boshu Zhang was born in Beijing and received his PhD from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in 1991. Dr. Zhang is the founding president of the Tianwen United Institute, a non-profit NGO focusing on the creation of educational materials promoting international education in the U.S. and China. Dr. Zhang’s early work studied Chinese dictatorship of the 20th century. Dr. Zhang has built a critical theory approach to considering China which combines philosophy and human sociobiology, questioning Marxist theories and proposing a “holistic human structure.” Dr. Zhang has written numerous books and articles focusing on constitutional and political reform in China.
