In this film, hashish dealer Alex Raphaelson, who lives in a gritty section of Paris, has hopes of starting over by helping a cousin open up a restaurant in Tel Aviv. In between Hebrew lessons and drained of money by his needy, manipulative older brother, Alex begins selling harder drugs to pay for the trip, and finds himself at the mercy of extremely dangerous hands. Elie Wajeman’s striking debut film lays bare the onerous pull of family ties while intelligently questioning whether, in relocating thousands of miles away, we can ever really escape ourselves.
