As part of the 17th Annual Professor John Howard Birss, Jr. Memorial Lecture Series and Library Exhibition, “Gabriel García Márquez and ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’” commemorates the 50th anniversary of the publication of his major work of literature. The exhibition is open daily through March 31 during the library's operating hours. Items are on display courtesy of the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin, Redwood Library and others.

The 2017 Lenten Season will commence with Ash Wednesday on March 1. The Office of Spiritual Life will host five services on campus throughout the day to which members of the community are most welcome. Want to receive ashes but in class or the office all day? Stop by for “Ashes on the Run” first thing in the morning. The Rev. Nancy Hamlin Soukup, University Multifaith Chaplain, will offer the "Ashes on the Run" service.

In celebration of Black History Month, RWU and RWU Law are presenting the opening of a groundbreaking exhibit documents 250 years of service and survival, telling the story in images and text of American firsts: the first black philanthropic organization (the Free African Union Society, founded in Newport); the first black Episcopal delegation to a Diocesan Convention (from Christ Church in Providence); the first piece of sacred music by an African-American (by Newport Gardner); and more.

Catholic services will be hosted by the Catholic Campus Ministry at 11:30 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 12:30 p.m., in the University Library's Mary Tefft White Cultural Center.

Maria Helena Rueda, associate professor of Spanish and Portuguese at Smith College, will deliver the keynote lecture.
